Special Projects

An important aspect of the work we do is our ability to customize literacy programming to meet the specific, and sometimes unique, needs of the schools and communities we serve. Following are current examples of these types of initiatives.

 One Book One School

After receiving a request from Pine Tree Hill Elementary, a My First Library partner school, to participate in the One Book One School program, The Original Six Foundation provided the book, Dream Street, to all students and staff. Students read the book in class and the entire school gathered for an assembly to discuss concepts together.

 A Father’s Voice

The “A Father’s Voice” program, created by the Riley Institute in 2016, allows inmates who are on good behavior to read a story to their child or children, using a recordable book. The books are then sent to their children, enabling the child and parent to “read” together, connecting the two through the joy of reading. The Original Six Foundation, along with other funders, partnered with the South Carolina Department of Corrections to provide a group of inmates at Tyger River Correctional Institution the opportunity to read and record bedtime stories for their children. All In Allendale

The Original Six Foundation joined forces with USC Salkehatchie and other community organizations for All In Allendale, a community celebration focused on education and health. The event featured hands-on STEM activities, an Original Six Foundation story corner, giveaways and more.

Since day one, Ambassador Haley has gone into our state’s rural communities and asked how we can make a real difference; what is it that each community and school truly need. Supporting these important projects not only brings community members together, but it empowers kids to reach for more and know they come from a special place.
